Turkish Newspaper Vocabulary: 100 Words You Need to Read the News

Stop getting stuck on Turkish news articles. Learn the 100 words that make the news hard to follow, from easiest to hardest, each with pronunciation and audio.

Turkish newspapers use a written register you rarely hear in conversation: long noun phrases before a final verb, impersonal passives such as belirtildi (it was stated), and formal connectors like ilişkin where speech says hakkında (about). A learner who follows a Turkish series with ease can still stall on the first paragraph of a news story.

In this article, you will learn the 100 words that Turkish news uses far more than everyday speech, in four groups from easiest to hardest, each with its pronunciation and a recording. İyi okumalar!

Turkish Newspaper Vocabulary 1 to 25: Loanwords and Familiar Nouns

The first group names the topics of the news: the economy, elections, courts and money. The first eight are loanwords you can recognise from English or French. The rest also turn up in films and series, according to the open FrequencyWords subtitle counts, so you may know them already. None of the 100 repeats the 100 most common Turkish words list we created (A1-A2 levels).

Words 26 to 50: Politics, Justice and Institutions

Politics and the courts fill most front pages, and their vocabulary barely exists outside them. Two words in this group describe different stages of the same story. Gözaltına alındı means the police detained someone, while tutuklandı means a judge ordered that person held in custody, a later and more serious step. İktidar and muhalefet also work as a pair: the party in power and the parties against it.

Words 51 to 75: Reporting Verbs and Events

A news story is mostly a record of who said what and what happened. In speech, a quote ends with dedi (said). In print it ends with belirtti, vurguladı, savundu, or the formula … ifadelerini kullandı (literally “used the expressions …”). Passive forms such as denildi (it was stated) and bekleniyor (is expected) report without naming a speaker, so review them alongside the Turkish passive voice.

Words 76 to 100: Connectors and Formal Register

The last group is the hardest, because these words are close to absent from spoken Turkish. Most are postpositions and fixed case forms that close a long noun phrase, as in fonlara ilişkin (regarding the funds) or soruşturma kapsamında (as part of the investigation). Learn each one with the case it takes, shown in the table, since that case ending marks where the phrase begins. The guide to Turkish postpositions covers the everyday words these replace.
