This structure is used to say that one thing has more or less of a quality than another. Unlike English, Turkish adjectives do not change form.

Noun + -dan/-den + daha

The suffix -dan / -den is the ablative case and corresponds to “than” in English. Its form changes according to vowel harmony.

The comparatives can be formed in two ways:

With adjectifs: noun + -dan/-den + daha + adjective

With çok/az to express quantities: noun + -dan/-den + daha + çok/az

Examples with Adjectives

Let’s look at common comparisons using adjectives. Notice that the adjective itself never changes.

İstanbul, İzmir’den daha kalabalık. (Istanbul is more crowded than Izmir.)

Kedim, köpeğimden daha tembel. (My cat is lazier than my dog.)

Bu film, diğerinden daha ilginç. (This movie is more interesting than the other one.)

Ankara, İstanbul’dan daha sakin. (Ankara is calmer than Istanbul.)

When you want to say that something has less of a quality, Turkish uses “daha az”. You can also use the opposite adjective with only “daha”.

Ankara, İstanbul’dan daha az stresli. (Ankara is less stressful than Istanbul.)

Bu şehir İstanbul’dan daha az kalabalık. => Bu şehir İstanbul’dan daha sakin.

Comparisons of quantities

When the comparison focuses on quantity rather than a quality, Turkish uses fixed expressions:

daha çok → more

daha az → less

These expressions are extremely common in daily speech and work with verbs as well as nouns. Be careful not to use those fixed expressions with an adjective!

Note that it’s not always required to use it after the ablative case (-dan/-den) to form a comparison.

Examples:

Bu sene geçen seneden daha çok çalışıyorum. (I’m working more this year than last year.)

Artık eskisine göre daha az kahve içiyorum. (I drink less coffee now than before.)

Bu şehirde insanlarla daha çok Türkçe konuşuyorum. (I speak Turkish more in this city.)

Age and Numbers in Comparisons

Turkish frequently uses daha with numbers to express age differences, measurements, or numerical comparison. This structure is the slightly different than for adjectives: noun + -dan/-den + number + daha + adjective.

Erkek arkadaşım benden 5 yaş daha genç. (My boyfriend is five years younger than me.)

Bu telefon eskisinden 300 gram daha hafif. (This phone is 300 grams lighter than the old one.)

Yeni evimiz eski evimizden 20 metrekare daha büyük. (Our new apartment is 20 square meters bigger than the old one.)

How to Use Superlatives in Turkish (En)

What Is a Superlative?

A superlative expresses the highest or lowest degree of a quality within a group. In English, this often involves endings like -est or structures like “the most.” In Turkish, superlatives are much simpler and completely regular.

There are two ways to use superlatives in Turkish:

en + adjective → superlative of a quality

en çok + verb → superlative of an action or preference

Superlatives with “en”

To form a superlative, place “en” directly before the adjective or adverb:

en + adjective / adverb

No additional suffix is required, and the adjective remains unchanged.

Examples

Superlatives are commonly used to talk about time, people, places, and personal experiences.

Bugün haftanın en soğuk günü. (Today is the coldest day of the week.)

Ailenin en yaşlısı dedem. It’s frequently used with verbs such as sevmek (to love), istemek (to want), and beğenmek (to like).

en çok + verb

Examples

Ben en çok Kore dizilerini seviyorum. (I like Korean dramas the most.)

Tatilde en çok dinlenmek istiyorum. (On vacation, I want to rest the most.)

En çok seni özlüyorum. (I miss you the most.)

Mastering daha and en will significantly improve your fluency, helping you express opinions, preferences, and comparisons with clarity and confidence in everyday Turkish.
