TYS Turkish Proficiency Test: Format, Dates, and Preparation

Understand the TYS exam, its B2 and C1 certificates, the current test format, official dates, and a practical preparation plan.

The Türkçe Yeterlik Sınavı, usually shortened to TYS, is the Turkish proficiency test developed by Yunus Emre Institute. It assesses reading, listening, writing, and speaking, with certificates awarded at B2 or C1 to successful candidates.

In this article, you will learn how the exam works, where to check dates and registration, and how to prepare using official sample materials. Information was checked against the Institute’s current pages on 9 September 2026. Haydi başlayalım!

The TYS at a Glance

The TYS measures your ability to use Turkish across different tasks. It is not a course-completion quiz. Choose it when you need to document your Turkish level or want an external assessment of your skills.

Question Short answer
Who develops the exam? Yunus Emre Institute
What does it assess? Reading, listening, writing, and speaking
Which certificates are available? B2 and C1
How much assessed time is there? 180 minutes, plus breaks and administrative time
Where do you apply? The Institute’s online exam portal during registration
Is there one universal fee? No; fees depend on the exam country or centre

If you are still building basic sentences, start with the A1 Turkish learning roadmap. The TYS is a later goal that requires preparation across all four skills.

Who Is the TYS For?

The official TYS FAQ identifies learners seeking evidence of proficiency, including applicants to Turkish universities and people documenting Turkish for professional purposes.

Check the receiving institution’s requirements before registering. Ask which certificate and level it accepts, how recent the result must be, and when you need to submit it. A certificate does not automatically satisfy every university or employer’s requirements.

Keep the language test separate from other admissions procedures. Your institution is the authority on the documents needed for your particular application.

Exam Sections and Timing

The official sample-exam page, updated in July 2026, gives the following structure. Use this newer page for current task descriptions rather than relying on old preparation articles.

Section Questions or tasks Assessed time Points
Reading 40 questions 60 minutes 25
Listening 30 questions 45 minutes 25
Writing 2 tasks 60 minutes 25
Interactive speaking 7 questions 10 minutes 15
Independent speaking 1 task 5 minutes 10

The assessed sections total 180 minutes and 100 points. Breaks and the arrangements for speaking mean that you should allow more time at the centre than the assessed duration alone.

The sample materials show different text types and tasks. Prepare to read for meaning, follow spoken information, write to a prompt, and respond to another person. Memorising a set of isolated grammar rules will not cover all of those demands.

B2 and C1 Certificates: What the Result Means

Successful candidates receive a B2 or C1 certificate. The Institute states that score ranges for these levels are determined through analysis after each exam. Do not rely on an old article claiming a single fixed passing score for every sitting.

The official FAQ gives the certificate a validity of two years. Check how that validity interacts with the deadline of the university or organisation receiving it. Allow time for results and document delivery when you choose your sitting.

TYS Dates and Registration in 2026

The official revised announcement sets the third 2026 exam for 27 September 2026. It lists the standard application window as 3-28 August 2026.

As of this guide’s 9 September check, that application window has closed. If you have not registered, consult the Institute for the next available sitting rather than assuming that you can join the September exam. Dates can change, which is why the official announcement matters more than an old calendar screenshot.

Applications take place through the Yunus Emre exam portal during the relevant window. Select the correct sitting and centre, then follow the portal’s document and payment instructions. Check the centre’s fee before making travel arrangements.

Start with an Official Sample Test

Open the official sample-exam page linked above and use its reading/listening booklet, listening recordings, writing tasks, and speaking tasks. Work from the current files on that page. The Institute updated the sample page in July 2026.

Your first attempt is a diagnosis. Work without a dictionary where the task requires independent understanding, use the stated time limits, and record which sections cause difficulty. For writing and speaking, ask a qualified Turkish teacher for feedback on your response to the task.

Keep three kinds of problems separate: language you do not know, instructions you misunderstood, and work you failed to finish in time. Each calls for a different change in your preparation.

Prepare Reading and Listening with a Purpose

For reading, explain why the text supports an answer. Underline or note the relevant passage during practice, then check whether you understood a contrast, reference, or conclusion correctly. Learning vocabulary alone will not fix a mistake caused by overlooking the writer’s argument.

For listening, separate your timed attempt from later study. First follow the recording as directed. Afterwards, replay the difficult part and identify what you missed. Do not give yourself unlimited replays during a practice attempt and then treat that result as a realistic exam score.

Longer sentences often depend on a small ending or connector. When that is the obstacle, revisit the relevant explanation in the Turkish sentence-structure guide, then return to the passage that caused the problem.

Prepare Writing and Speaking as Separate Skills

For writing, practise answering the exact prompt. Before drafting, identify the reader, purpose, and required points. Leave time to check whether your paragraphs connect and whether your endings express the meaning you intended.

For speaking, record a short response to an unfamiliar topic. Listen for whether you state a clear point, support it, and finish the answer. Also practise interaction with a teacher or partner: follow-up questions require you to listen and respond, not simply recite a prepared speech.

Use feedback to choose your next task. If your ideas are clear but endings are inaccurate, practise those forms. If your grammar is sound but your answer wanders away from the prompt, work on planning and relevance.

A Four-Week Preparation Framework

This is a suggested organisation plan for learners already approaching the required level. It is not a promise that four weeks will take you from beginner to B2 or C1.

Week Main task Evidence of progress
1 Complete a diagnostic attempt and inspect the format A list of specific weaknesses in each skill
2 Work on the weakest reading/listening tasks and language gaps Answers supported by clearer understanding
3 Write and speak regularly, with feedback Responses that address the prompt and use corrections
4 Rehearse timed sections and organise exam-day documents A workable pacing plan and confirmed practical details

Keep practising the stronger skills as well. The aim is a balanced performance, not one excellent section carrying several neglected ones.

Before Exam Day

Read your admission document and centre instructions carefully. Confirm the location, arrival time, identification requirements, and permitted items from the official instructions for your sitting.

Plan the journey in advance and keep the required documents together. Avoid relying on a general blog checklist when your centre has supplied more specific directions.

Conclusion

The TYS tests how you use Turkish in reading, listening, writing, and speaking, with B2 and C1 certificates for successful candidates. Prepare from the current official samples, verify the relevant dates, and use feedback to address your weakest tasks.

A clear preparation plan gives each study session a purpose beyond simply doing more Turkish.
