The past tense, known as Belirli Geçmiş Zaman or simply geçmiş zaman, is used in Turkish to describe actions, events, or conditions that occurred and were completed in the past. Mastering this tense is essential to effectively narrate past experiences clearly and accurately.

How to Form the Past Tense in Turkish

In Turkish, the past tense is formed by adding suffixes directly to the verb stem. These suffixes depend on vowel harmony and consonant assimilation:

Verb Stem EndingSuffixes
vowels/consonants-di, -dı, -du, -dü
after voiceless consonants (ç, f, h, k, p, s, ş, t)-ti, -tı, -tu, -tü

Examples:

  • Gel (to come) → geldi (he/she came)
  • Ara (to call) → aradı (he/she called)
  • Geç (to pass through) → geçti (he/she passed through)

Common Time Expressions in the Past

These time expressions help pinpoint when the past event occurred:

  • Dün – yesterday

  • Geçen sene – last year
  • İki yıl önce – two years ago

  • Bugüne kadar – until today

Using Past Tense with Nouns and Adjectives (İsim Cümlelerinde Belirli Geçmiş Zaman)

In Turkish, the past tense can also apply directly to nouns and adjectives, forming descriptive or nominal sentences. If a noun or adjective ends in a vowel, insert the buffer letter -y before the suffix.

To express negation in the past tense, we use değil in place of the suffix directly on the noun or adjective. Then, we add the past tense suffix to değil.
